How to Install an RCBO in an Electrical Panel

RCBO, or Residual Current Circuit Breaker with Overcurrent Protection, is an electrical protection device that combines residual current protection and overcurrent protection in one unit. Because it provides two types of protection, an RCBO is commonly used in homes, buildings, and other electrical installations that require additional safety.

However, installing an RCBO is not simply about placing the device inside an electrical panel. Each wire must be connected to the correct terminal so the protection functions can work properly. Here is a simple overview of the RCBO installation process.

1. Initial Preparation Before Installing an RCBO

Before connecting any wires, make sure the tools, panel, and RCBO are ready. Proper preparation can make the installation more organized and reduce safety risks.

Turn Off the Power Supply

The first step is to turn off the main power supply before opening the electrical panel. Never work on a panel that is still energized. After switching off the power, verify that there is no voltage at the work area using an appropriate testing device.

Open the Electrical Panel

Once the area has been confirmed safe, open the panel cover to access the RCBO installation area. Pay attention to the existing devices and wiring so the new RCBO does not interfere with other components.

Install the RCBO on the Panel Rail

Install the RCBO onto the available rail or mounting position inside the panel. Make sure it is firmly attached and correctly positioned. Before connecting the wires, check the wiring diagram provided with the RCBO because the input and output terminal positions can vary between models.

2. Connecting the Input Wires on the Top Side of the RCBO

Once the RCBO is physically installed, the next step is to connect the incoming power wires to the input terminals. In a single-phase installation, the phase and neutral wires are normally connected to their respective terminals.

Connect the Phase Wire

Connect the phase wire from the power source to the phase input terminal of the RCBO. Make sure the wire is connected to the correct terminal and tightened properly. A loose connection can create excessive heat and may affect the reliability of the electrical installation.

Connect the Neutral Wire

Next, connect the neutral wire from the power source to the neutral input terminal of the RCBO. Do not switch the phase and neutral positions. Always refer to the RCBO wiring diagram before making any connection.

3. Connecting the Output Wires on the Bottom Side of the RCBO

After the input side is connected, the output wires can be connected to the electrical load. This is the circuit that receives power through the RCBO and is protected by the device.

Connect the Phase Output to the Load

Connect the phase output wire from the RCBO output terminal to the electrical load or circuit. Make sure the cable size is suitable for the installation and that the terminal connection is properly tightened.

Connect the Neutral Output to the Load

Next, connect the neutral output wire from the RCBO to the neutral side of the load. The neutral connection is important because the RCBO monitors the current balance in the circuit to detect leakage current.

Connect the Grounding Wire

The grounding wire is an important part of the electrical safety system. Connect it to the grounding system or grounding terminal in the panel according to the installation design. Grounding does not replace the RCBO, but it works together with other protection measures to improve electrical safety.

Check All Connections Before Turning the Power On

After all wires have been connected, do not immediately turn the power back on. Check the phase, neutral, and grounding connections and make sure all terminals are properly tightened.

The installation should follow the wiring diagram supplied by the RCBO manufacturer. If the device has a test button, use it after restoring the power to check whether the protection function operates correctly. Electrical panel work and testing should be handled by a qualified or competent electrical professional.

Choosing the right RCBO is just as important as installing it correctly. Select an RCBO based on the electrical system, rated current, number of poles, and other installation requirements. If you are looking for an RCBO for home, commercial, or other electrical installations, you can find quality electrical products at Listrik Kita. Choose the right RCBO based on your installation requirements and complete your electrical protection system with the right product.
